One of the things that The Learning Basket emphasizes in seminars is the need for parents to teach their children practical life skills. We want to equip our children with the necessary tools for them to grow into competent and independent adults.
This means asking our children to help in chores such as setting the table and sorting the laundry. We encourage them to dress up and eat by themselves. More importantly, we provide them with an environment and age-appropriate experiences that will allow them to freely explore and learn about the world. And this is primarily what Montessori learning is all about.
This attention to a child’s “inner teacher,” learning about life skills, and providing a safe but nurturing environment for a child was first introduced by Maria Montessori in the early 1900s. She developed this educational philosophy by observing children ages two to six and how they perceive the world, absorb their environment, and learn through hands-on play and experiences.
Over a century later, thousands of preschools all over the world continue to practice this unique approach in early childhood education.
While teachers in Montessori preschools are trained to be such, parents can easily apply these principles to their homes. In this seminar, we will find out why it is important for us to raise our children to become independent and empowered adults.
