Kids who want to learn, learn best. WIKA’Y GALING! uses enjoyable children’s literature and interactive activities anchored on Philippine culture to make Filipino relevant, interesting, even fun! Students begin where they are at, and gradually build solid language foundation skills to gain confidence in learning Filipino as a second language.

Learning a language is a process that requires repeated, daily exposure: it needs long-term commitment from both students and parents. The success of WIKA’Y GALING! is anchored on teachers who engage children at the center and parents who support their child’s learning at home.

Levels 1-8 Beginning FilipinoThese levels are for children with little exposure to Filipino and for whom it is a second language. In Beginning Filipino, they are given vocabulary according to themes, and taught basic Filipino grammar through practice and take-home worksheets. They learn to speak, read and write words and use them in daily conversation. Parents support learning by reading Filipino stories at home and conversing in Filipino using conversation prompts.

Levels 9-18 Beginning Filipino and Sentence WritingThese levels are for children who have learned words in Filipino but cannot use them in proper sentences and rely heavily on translation to comprehend stories.  The lessons help them acquire good oral communication skills and understand broad grammar rules with correct usage. They learn to speak, write and understand simple to complex sentences and compose short paragraphs (3-5 sentences). Learned skills enable them to confidently use the language in simple conversation and improve in academics.

Levels 19-27Reading Comprehension in FilipinoThis stage is for children who can speak in Filipino but demonstrate limited comprehension skills, such as giving inferences and predictions, identifying the elements of the story, and giving supporting details of given texts in school. They still rely on translation in reading Filipino stories and texts, which is reflected in the quality of their Filipino compositions. Teachers explicitly teach them reading strategies, reinforce their vocabulary, and enhance written expression by giving different written post-reading activities.

Levels 28-35Reading and Writing Enrichment in FilipinoThese levels are for children who are able to communicate and express their ideas completely, but still have gaps in grammar, reading comprehension and writing. They have yet to master word choice and sentence structure, which hinders effective writing in Filipino. Mentor texts and books are used as springboard for the writing lessons. They are given exercises in sentence conventions, construction and word choice.

Reading Comprehension in Filipino (Advanced)This special level was developed for students who need to understand and appreciate particular literary works such as Ibong Adarna, Florante at Laura, Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. They are taught how to read between the lines, contextualize, and appreciate the importance of Philippine history, culture and tradition in relation to literature. Students ultimately develop creative and critical thinking that goes beyond simply what is required in school.

Important note: If your children’s first language is English, then it will take time for them to begin speaking and writing in Filipino. The ability to comprehend in a second language is not always measured by a child’s capacity to use the language in daily conversation. What parents can look out for is the growing capacity to understand what is heard and what is read. Learning may also be seen in the attempts to use the language on their own. Children may also show more interest in Philippine culture and literature. Given time, they will acquire confidence to use what they have gradually learned to speak more fluently in Filipino.

The Wika'y Galing! program is P 2,800 per month. The fee is inclusive of book-borrowing privileges.
