Details

From self-awareness, participants will be led into relationship-building through helpful points to handling conflicts. The group will be guided into a special activity of meaningful dialogues to exercise their empathy and sensitivity to others. The workshop will provide a safe, non-intimidating place for openness and genuine care and respect for others.


The workshop ends with individual resolutions (and group resolutions, if they apply) toward improved management of conflicts and relationships within the workplace.

Outline

At the end of this highly interactive workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify their individual tendencies toward a particular conflict management style depending on their (1) assertiveness, the extent to which the individual attempts to satisfy his or her own concerns, and (2) cooperativeness, the extent to which the individual attempts to satisfy other people’s concerns. The 5 conflict-handling modes are (Thomas-Kilmann):

    • Competing

    • Collaborating

    • Compromising

    • Accommodating

    • Avoiding

  • Identify the benefits and challenges of each of the 5 conflict-handling modes and determine their appropriate applications and communication styles in various situations

  • Learn helpful and practical guides to handling conflicts

    • Empathy vs. running assumptions and hasty generalizations of others

    • Effective Communication

      • Tone of voice

      • Non-verbal cues

      • “I” vs. “You” statements (assertive vs. aggressive language)

      • “Should”

      • Rephrasing attacking statements into proactive statements

    • Active Listening and Empathetic Dialogue

  • Engage in meaningful dialogue to exercise and promote empathy and sensitivity for relationship-building (or relationship-deepening) and peace-keeping

  • Commit to individual resolutions (and group resolutions, if they apply) toward improved management of conflicts and relationships
