Course Background:

 

Every year there are more than 3,000 disabling contact injuries resulting from preventable electrical accidents in the workplace? Did you know that electrical accidents are 10 to 30 times more fatal compared to other workplace accidents? As an electrical engineer what are you doing to ensure a safe environment? Electrical Safety is a critical issue in a workplace and is required to be part of every company safety program. Electrical accidents have far reaching consequences beyond lost time, damage to equipment or jump in insurance premiums. They can also greatly affect company’s image in the community and may lead to costly litigation. In fact, 3 of the top 10 OSHA violations are related to Electrical Safety. One of these major issues is Arc Flash. Arc Flash is an electrical explosion accompanied by blinding flash of light powerful shockwave and extreme temperature as high as 35,000 degrees Fahrenheit. Arc Blast is an extreme form of arc flash where sounds 160 dB and molten metal attract or thrown out a greater than 700 miles an hour. Arc flash most commonly occurs through some form of interaction. Whether human or mechanical interaction during maintenance or during regular operation, it can be because of poor maintenance of equipment debris throughout the facility. There are three main reasons that should be considered; first is safety, second if there’s a risk management and the third is law. This course will help electrical engineers to conduct arc flash hazard analysis in reference to minimum standards and actual practices.

  • Enumerate the fundamental, principles of load flow analysis, short circuit analysis and protection coordination in relation to arc flash analysis
  • Determine arc flash hazard categories in relation to actual practices.
  • Review theories, formulas and techniques for power system analysis in relation to short circuit, coordination and arc flash hazard
  • Create and understand Arc Flash Hazard and its application.
  • Understand the use of protective device to mitigate arc flash hazard.
  • Maximize the use of protective devices: use of instantaneous function/ trip
  • Generate an Arc Flash hazard analysis using software (Paladin DesignBase formerly EDSA)
