Scope:
Loss control management has a broad scope that covers all disciplines of resources conservation. Some example application fields include:
Industrial safety Product liability Industrial hygiene
Fire protection Security of assets System safety
Pollution control Damage control Process safety
Energy conservation Off-job safety Environmental protection
Every organization has economic and social goals. Incidents could interrupt or downgrade work processes toward achievement of these goals. Incidents could ultimately result in damages, losses and reduced profits. Managers must, therefore, have a loss control management system to identify, assess and control the causes of downgrading events.
For many years industrial safety was focused on personal injuries and motor vehicle collisions. This narrow scope made minor contributions to the achievement of business goals. Consequently, safety was treated as a minor function in the management system.
In the loss control management system, line management is fully responsible for preventing or minimizing all accidental losses. Support functions like Insurance, Medical, Security, Environment, Fire Protection, Loss Prevention, Engineering and other specialists are all involved to provide staff assistance.
