Summer is here! Time to have fun, and learn new skills that will stay with kids their whole lives!

The main purpose of the DEGAS SUMMER ART PROGRAM is to let learners dip their toes in creating, and take the first steps in expressing themselves through art. This 12- hour program is the Summer Season, one of the four season sets of exploratory art activities. All art activities will come from the three main paths: Drawing, Storytelling, and Design. The idea is that through these free, unrelated activities, the student gets to have fun, and see their potential as creators, and see if art is a primary interest for themselves.

As an added bonus, enrollees can use the skills they have picked up in these activities for the FUNdamentals of Art Program, the after-school Art Program that we also offer!

Method of Teaching
This course provides live instructor-led demonstration and discussions, student engagement and on-the-spot hands on exercises using Zoom or Google Meet. Students will be given instruction on how to tackle the day’s art activity, and they can submit this to DEGAS for collation and eventual presentation (as necessary, and as desired).

Prerequisites - Students must have the following:
  • Zoom application, or Gmail account (for Google Meet)
  • A supply of clean paper
  • A supply of Heavy Paper
  • Some colored paper (we will use green, yellow, and brown, but we won’t dictate on the colors)  At least one pencil
  • Non-Toxic Poster Paints  At least one round brush
  • At least one flat, broad brush  Some paste or soluble liquid glue
  • At least three eggs (you can have the eggs, we only need the shells) Some optional requirements:  Colored Pencils, if you don’t feel like using paints
  • Cleaning materials for the paint

Materials Required:

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Coloring Materials (we discourage the use of markers)

Materials Required:

  • Paper
  • Pencil

3 - Paint! Paint! Paint!

Students will play around with paints this time, and they will pick any subject that is summer-related!

Materials Required:

  •  Pencil
  • Non-Toxic Poster Paints
  • 1 Round Brush
  • 1 Broad Brush

4 - Home is Where My Family Is

Students draw their house and their parent(s), siblings, househelpers, as well as themselves, in a summer setting

Materials Required:

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Coloring Materials (we still discourage the use of markers)

5 - I Lost My Pencil: What Can I Do with Paper?

Materials Required:

  • Colored Paper
  • Scissors (adult supervision and assistance required for younger students)

6 - Color Theory, But Summer

Students will learn the basics of color theory, and will apply it by coloring a summer object silhouette assigned by The Gabay.

  • Coloring Materials (yup, you guessed it, no markers) · Non-Toxic Poster Paints (for the students who like to paint)
  • Brush

Students will be assigned to draw an animal you usually associate with summer. No color and pattern is too wild!

Materials Required:

  • Paper

  • Non-Toxic Poster Paints (we really hope you bought this instead, though it’s optional at this session too)
