DRAWING 1.0

Skills-based learning is one of the most effective methods for teaching not only skills in drawing but also in the analysis of artworks.

Students will learn to recognize the natural world in abstracted form and will be able to break down the pictorial field in abstracted lines, textures, shapes, and values. We at the Atelier believe that honing the student’s visual perception increases his or her visual intelligence regardless of age.

In this course, students will learn a more disciplined drawing process and cultivate a workflow aligned with the atelier approach. The student will learn the ways lines express ideas and be more attuned to planar forms and tones. The student will be able to distinguish the elements of art, learn to identify and correct drawing errors, find accurate angles, and combine lines to form mass.

ALFRED GALVEZ

Alfred Galvez (b. 1973) was born in Davao City. He is an alumnus of the Philippine High School for the Arts. At 17, he became an apprentice of Mariano Madarang from the Philippine Women’s University. He trained in restoring and conserving the paintings of Filipino masters like Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo, Juan Luna, Fernando Amorsolo, and Carlos Francisco. He studied at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts and the Philippine School of Interior Design.

To hone his artistry as a muralist, Galvez sojourned at the Bottega de Arte, Florence, Italy. After many decades of experience, Galvez founded MIKRA Faux, Inc., a group of artists specializing in Fine Art murals. The mural project for the Ateneo de Davao Chapel of Christ the King that features the splendor of Mindanao heritage is just one of the exemplary projects he led. For “Makati, A City Built by People” at the M1 Building in Makati, Galvez and his team studied the social rhythms of the city, the surge and dissipation of crowds, and the city’s sensorium.

Galvez’s artistic practice ranges from portraits to murals and faux finishes. Galvez is also known for his Filipinoiserie series, where he uses local scenes and leitmotifs to honor Filipino heritage, often reinventing and animating Philippine folklore.

JESSA ALMIROL
Jessa Almirol (b. 1991) is a visual artist based in Quezon City, Metro Manila. A graduate of Far Eastern University’s Fine Arts program with a major in Painting, Almirol has exhibited extensively locally and abroad, namely, in Vietnam, Indonesia and Hong Kong. Informed by the classical techniques of the Old Masters of which she is also an instructor of at Galvez Atelier, her work is inarguably, primarily figurative with, in recent years, an increasing interest and incorporation of the abstract - space, form, color - as influenced by the early 20th century Bauhaus and De Stijl movements.

Her most recent significant group exhibitions include the following: Borderless Space Jogja Art Festival (2022) in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, under LAV Gallery; All Things Bright & Beautiful, All Creatures Great & Small (2022) in Hong Kong under Yidi Art Gallery; and Dancing in Supernova at Art Fair Philippines 2023 under Super Duper Gallery.

Almirol opened her first Solo Exhibition in September 2023 titled "Pantsdrunk" at Gravity Art Space, Quezon City; and her recent 2nd Solo Exhibition at Provenance Art Gallery, Shangri La The Fort, Taguig City last January 2024.

Galvez Atelier is a home for artists and art students who want to immerse in the fine and decorative arts. It is a creative learning hub where students can watch artist-teachers at work. The atelier offers a space for contemplation and creation for artists, so that their ideas make flourish and take material form. The entire structure is a residence repurposed into an atelier, with spaces allotted for an office, art production, and year-round art classes. The year-round art classes include drawing, painting, and faux finishes and decorative painting. Galvez Atelier also offers an apprenticeship program.

About the Founder:
Alfred Galvez studied Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines. His practice ranges from portraits, murals, faux finishes transform the abode into a resplendent space. He established AGmurals in 2003-2014. Galvez was exposed to Filipino masters at an early age. At 17, he was an apprentice of Dean Mariano Madarang from the Philippine Women’s University. He was then trained in the restoration and conservation of the paintings of Fernando Amorsolo, Carlos Francisco, Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo and Juan Luna. Keen to develop his expertise, Alfred studied under Marco Cavallini and Alison Grace Woolley in 2007. The Bottega Arte in Florence, Italy was esteemed for trompe l’oeil techniques. Aside from the traditional Florentine approach to murals, the studio was also known for architectural illusionistic techniques seen in ceiling paintings that seem to transform the earthly realm with dramatic lighting effects.

In 2013, along with two fellow artists, he opened the very first Classical Drawing and Traditional Oil Painting workshops studio in Kamuning, Quezon City. Since then, his art workshops have continued to teach foundations of art to students across ages, delighting students both young and old. His art workshops are most sought after by those who are preparing for an art career and those who choose to begin by learning the secrets of the Old Masters.
